What happens when you turn on the sprinklers during a women’s race in Central Park on a hot and humid, day? We all turn into children! Check out the awesome details from today’s Oakley Mini 10K!
It was 68 degrees with a humidity of 78 percent, but that didn’t stop the 5,870 ladies that ran in the New York Road Runner’s club annual event.
The Oakley New York Mini 10k is a sponsored all women’s race that runs the entire loop of Central Park.
The weather was cloudy but it didn’t damper the spirits for thousands of women in attendance. From start to finish you could see the excitement on the women’s faces moments before the race. Pink was an ongoing theme. For their hard work, ladies were awarded pink medals, roses, and pink bagels!
With all the excitement, there was also room for competition. Rhode Island resident Molly Huddle, a U.S. Olympian, became the first American champion of the mini since Deen Kastor’s win in 2004.
She finished with an impressive time of 31:37 fending off fellow competitor Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia. Daska was last year’s champion and recent winner of the Bolder Boulder 10k.
Her words to describe Huddle, “Ferocious!”
Bronx native and 2013 women’s 2013 ING NYC Marathon 2nd place finisher Buzunesh Deba was among the elites. Not only is she a local, but one of the crowd’s favorite. She placed 5th in today’s event.
Remember when you were a kid? How excited you got when the fire hydrant was turned on? That described a relief the lades felt as they ran through the hose during mile 5. It was a much needed refreshment due to the high humidity runners dealt with as they ran through the Central Park, and if you don’t believe me, just look at their faces!
Unity and Support
Photo of the Day went to the men of the Dashing Whippets of New York City. They put on their finest undies to support the ladies of their group and were quite the attention getter!
It was a day of unity, and as thousands filled the park, their pride filled our hearts! Another great race put forth by Oakley and the New York Road Runner’s club.
